Content : | The love story of Prince Laʿl, son of Zamurrud Shāh, King of Bengal, and Princess Gauhar, daughter of Jawāhir Shāh, King of the Fairies, was written most probably between 1165-1175 A. H. by ʿĀrif-ud-Dīn Ḵẖān. whose poetical name was ʿĀjiz and whose nick-name was Mīrzāʾī. ʿĀjiz’s ancestors came from Balḵẖ during the reign of Aurangzeb ʿĀlamgīr (1656-1707 A. D.) and were rewarded a ‘manṣab’ on the recommendation of G̲h̲āzī-ud-Dīn Firūz Jang. ʿĀjiz was most probably born at Aurangābād but we are not informed of his date of birth. He lost his father at an early age and was supported by friends of his deceased father. When he grew older, he received the title of “Ḵẖānī” and а ‘manṣab’ from Nawāb Āṣaf Jāh and Nawāb Nāṣir Jang. He distinguished himself among his contemporaries on account of his literary taste and poetical talents. Besides his mas̤nawī, Laʿl-o-Gauhar, which became extremely popular, he left one Dīwān of his G̲h̲azals, which is in the Āṣafiyah Library, Hyderābād, Deccan. [Another сору containing Qaṣidahs and Mas̤nawīs is in Bodl. Library. (See Sachau and Ethé (Bodl.) No. 1172 and II, 2149. Spies.] He died in 1764 A. D. at Nāndeṛ and was buried there. This сору of Laʿl-o-Gauhar is fairly well written and contains 520 verses. |
